Automated OS Updates on Digital Signage Players

We intentionally do not enable automated operating system (OS) updates on our digital signage devices because of the risks they introduce to system stability and uptime.

Unlike a personal computer or mobile phone, our devices are part of a tightly integrated platform where the OS, media player, browser, and our digital signage software all work together and very highly dependent on each other. An automated OS update typically installs not only the base OS patches, but also updates to a wide range of system dependencies and libraries. These updates are applied without any validation against our software stack, playback mechanism and server communications and can unintentionally break critical functionality—such as video playback, network connectivity, device monitoring, or third-party integrations.

For this reason, every update must be tested and certified by our engineering team before being deployed. This extensive process generally takes several weeks and ensures that:

  • Compatibility is verified – All dependencies introduced by the update are validated against our software.
  • Uptime is protected – Clients do not experience sudden outages due to untested changes.
  • Performance is maintained – The update does not degrade playback quality, scheduling, or system responsiveness.
  • Security patches are still applied – Updates are rolled out in a controlled way as a part of OS security window, so you get the benefits of new patches without the risks of instability.

This approach prioritizes reliability and continuity, which are critical for digital signage environments where downtime directly impacts communication and operations. While it may seem more convenient to allow automated updates, our controlled update process is designed to protect your network of devices and ensure long-term system stability.
